Catechetical Sunday
Did you know it’s Catechetical Sunday?
Every year, the Church celebrates Catechetical Sunday. This day recognizes the important role of catechists throughout the church. So what’s a catechist? Catechists are people who help others encounter Jesus Christ and grow as disciples. These aren’t just our pastor and staff, school teachers, or small group leaders, but also parents and each and every one of us sitting in the pews! By virtue of our Baptism, all of us are called to share the Good News and accompany others on their faith journey. Today, may we all renew our commitment to lifelong faith formation in our parish community.
The theme for Catechetical Sunday this year reveals Jesus’ mission and identity. Anointed by the Holy Spirit, He is sent to bring hope, healing, and freedom—especially to the poor, the brokenhearted, and the forgotten. Luke 4:18 shows that the Messiah comes not with power or status, but with compassion, restoring dignity and proclaiming God’s mercy. It also becomes a model for us, as the Church, to continue Christ’s work by sharing the Good News and caring for those most in need.
Prayer for all Catechists
Loving Father, we pray today for our catechists. We thank you for their gift of ministry in your Church. Grant them your wisdom that they may grow in the understanding and teaching of your Word. Grant them also your love that they may be fruitful heralds of your Word and lead others to love you. Pour forth your Holy Spirit upon them to grant them wisdom about what is important; knowledge of the truths
of faith; understanding of their meaning; right judgement about how to apply them in life; courage to persevere even in the face of adversity; reverence before all that is sacred and holy; and that loving zeal which leads others to a transforming encounter with your Son. We pray this through Christ, our Lord. Amen.
Catechesis for Discipleship Award
We recently awarded the Catechesis for Discipleship Award to Erin F. Each year, parishes across the Archdiocese honor catechists with
the Catechesis for Discipleship Award. Erin has a strong relationship with Christ and inspires her students to live as disciples. She joyfully witnesses the Catholic faith at Family Formation and in her daily life.
